The Mauritius Co-operative Savings and Credit League Ltd (MACOSCLE) was launched in 1969, on the initiative of the leaders of the two existing companies: the “First Co-operative Credit Union” – Edwin de Robillard and Claude Toinette – and the “Manual Workers Cooperative Credit Union” – Elide Topize and Oscar Charlotte.
It was officially recognized on March 17, 1970. Initially, its board of directors consisted of 10 members from the various companies – Credit Unions and Thrift & Savings Societies.
In 1970, MACOSCLE hired Elide Topize (MWCCU) and Hedley Brelu-Brelu (IDP CCU) as part time. From July 1, 1977 MACOSCLE employed a full time Manager /Secretary, André Fanny was mainly responsible for the administrative and promotional work of the movement.
In October 1977, the Ministry of Co-operatives placed a secretary / typist at the disposal of MACOSCLE. MACOSCLE is the only Federation of Credit Unions registered and recognized by the Republic of Mauritius. MACOSCLE is run by a Board of nine directors where a panel of 3 directors is elected each year.
